On Saturday, November 2nd, See A Need - Meet A Need hosted the Houston chapter of Black Girls in Art Spaces, where creativity, conversation, and community came together in a powerful celebration of Black artistry. The event was a full RSVP, with attendees enjoying light refreshments as they gathered for a morning of connectedness and conversation.
The highlight of the event was a guided tour of I Am, Because You Are, an exhibition by SANMAN artist-in-residence Chayse Sampy. The tour began in The Reading Room’s gallery and moved through Sanman Studios, where Chayse, alongside moderator Julisa Gilmore, led an insightful walkthrough. Chayse took time to stop at each piece, sharing insight of her artistic journey, the influences behind her work, and how current events, particularly around Blackness in the United States, shaped her creative perspective.
As Chayse spoke on each piece, the audience was invited to engage in a thoughtful Q&A session. Attendees asked questions, gaining a deeper understanding of the meaning behind the artworks, while Chayse and Julisa delved into a rich dialogue about interpretation and the power of art as a reflection of blackness in society.
This event marked a beautiful moment of shared experiences and perspectives, strengthening the bond within the community of Black women in the arts, while also showcasing the power of art in addressing social issues.
